On Torch Welding Extraction
On torch welding fume extraction (or also known as on-tool extraction) capture welding fumes directly at-source as the weld is being completed. They provide a unique solution for [predominantly] MIG welders, where there are continuous wire welding processes taking place.
MIG welding torches, within with on-torch welding fume extraction offer a complete solution to the current HSE requirements as they remove the weld fumes away at-source. According to the most recent HSE welding fume facts, this is where the concentration of harmful substances will be highest, in what is called the 'plume of fume' that rise at the immediate point from the welding arc.
What is On Torch Welding Fume Extraction?
On torch welding fume extraction systems involves the use of a specialist welding gun, which features an integrated extraction tool functionality. Fumes are removed from over the welding pool at the welding point by a high vacuum system.
At the end of the welding gun nozzle (at the tip of the torch), guns feature small openings which draw away welding fumes at the source. Fumes are carried through the hose into either a portable or centralised high-vacuum system. These then collects and filters the fumes and returns clean air to the workshop.
Save Time and Money
On torch welding fume extraction systems offer an alternative capture method against typical local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems, as they capture the fume at-source, at the exact point they're generated during the welding process. Whilst conventional LEV systems are typically required to be frequently repositioned, which can be an issue when working on large, or long workpieces. Repositioning interrupts the welder's task and can also be limited by the working radius.
On torch welding fume extraction leads to an increased arc on-time and productivity from welders, as the extraction unit isn't frequently being adjusted.
In addition, high vacuum extraction systems can save you money as they are much more energy-efficient. Lower energy usages enable a low-cost welding operation.
What do the HSE State?
Shortly after the reclassification and the enforcement expectations changed, HSE released new guidance for managers. in November 2019, the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) released revised task-specific COSHH guidance for welding, cutting and allied jobs to help managers make sure that exposure to all kinds of welding fume is controlled in the workplace.
On the HSE's website, they have different guidance sheets depending on the task you're undertaking. These include:
- WL0 - Advice For Managers
- WL2 - Welding in Confined/Limited/Restricted Spaces
- WL3 - Welding Fume Control. In this guidance, it recommends: "Using a movable fume capture hood on a flexible extraction arm for large to extra-large workpieces."
