Laboratory Extraction Arms

At Auto Extract Systems, we have a complete range of laboratory extraction arms and accessories to suit every situation and working environment. We can help you to provide a comprehensive local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system and create a pollution-free working environment for your laboratories.

Common Health Hazards for Laboratories

There are all kinds of laboratories that exist in the world, from research labs to school chemistry labs and pharmaceutical plants. Regardless of its function, a laboratory can be a dangerous environment due to the complex range of health risks that can arise. When working at a laboratory, such as analysing specimens or testing new products, hazardous fumes and particles may be released into the air. Exposure to dust, fumes and other harmful contaminants can lead to serious health problems. For these reasons, it's important to invest in laboratory extraction arms that suit your operations. Lab extraction arms are designed to capture contaminants before they can reach a person and cause health effects.

User-Friendly Operation

Laboratory extraction arms are durable, manufactured to a high quality, as standard, and are flexible and self-supporting through the use of aluminium tubes and polypropylene joints.

Joints provide the user with a simple, yet smooth performance. It can operate above and below its mounting height and can be turned through virtually 360°. It can be positioned high or low and has good stability when manoeuvred into position. Gas springs to help the user easily place the extraction arm into the optimal capture position.

Laboratory Extraction Arm Variants

Laboratory extraction arms can be specified in a variety of formats and can be tailored to your working environment and dust and fume extraction processes. They can be specified in a variety of finishes to suit a wide range of different applications for a broad range of processes, including for ATEX-rated and electrostatic safe working environments. Laboratory extraction arms can be specified for wall mounting, table mount or ceiling mounted installation.

Laboratory fume extraction arms can be specified in a variety of length up to two metres long, with either one, two or three elbow joints and in a choice of three different diameters, from 50mm, 75mm or 100 mm. Our range of extraction arms can be specified to suit a range of dust, fume or mist extraction processes for all kinds of working environments, these include:

  • Standard - Suitable for extracting most types of airborne contaminants, for example in laboratories, schools, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, nail salons and light industrial applications. Extract arms feature aluminium tubes and joints.
  • Polypropylene (PP) - Suitable for extracting airborne contaminants in working environments where corrosive contaminants in high concentrations are being used for example, in certain laboratories and the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Extract arms are manufactured using polypropylene tubes and joints.
  • ESD (Electrostatic-safe) - Suitable for extracting airborne contaminants in working environments where spark formation risk is required to be avoided, for example, the electronics industry. Laboratory extraction arms are manufactured to ESD standard, according to EN 61340-5-1 and certified to EN-100015-1).
  • ATEX-Rated - Suitable for extracting airborne contaminants in ATEX-classified environments, for example, in laboratories, the chemical and petrochemical industries, gas distribution, and the paint and pharmaceutical industries.

Always Choose a Low-Pressure Drop

We've tried and tested a wide variety of different laboratory extraction arms on the market and have found these to be the most robust and highest-quality arms available. Extraction arms are capable of achieving the lowest possible pressure drop possible. This is primarily down to their unique method of construction and manufacture; they combine the maximum level of flexibility to the user with low-pressure drop. The air passes through the joints without creating unnecessary turbulence, thus producing an energy-saving low-pressure drop and a quieter working environment.

  • Pressure Drop - A low-pressure drop within the system. Less mechanical parts disturb the airflow mean the user will get a better airflow at the capture hood
  • Easier to Maintain - Less mechanical seizures mean it's easier to move to the desired capture location, but also easy to clean and maintain. Contaminant capture by the LEV system, such as dust, can easily seize up joints and make it difficult to manoeuvre and service
  • Noise - Less noise disruption from the LEV system ventilation will make the workplace less noisy
  • Performance - Our extraction arms offer 30% better airflow and 50% static pressure drop than a traditional internal knuckle type arm

Optimal Capture Hoods

To ensure the extraction arm effectively and efficiently captures the contaminant, it's essential to get the optimum capture hood. it's essential to get the capture hood as close to the contaminant as possible, whilst a good rule of thumb would be to position the capture hood two to three times the diameter of the extractor tube away from the process. At the recommended airflow, the extractor will provide high efficiency even if disturbances are generated in the surroundings.

The right capture hood can be selected to ensure the contaminants efficiently contained, for examples, a dome hood, suction nozzle or metal hood. When you get in touch with us, we can help recommend the right kind of hood for your working processes.

Telescopic Laboratory Extraction Arms

We can also supply telescopic laboratory extraction arms for compact working environments where there’s limited space available. Telescopic laboratory extraction arms are equipped with gas springs to balance the weight of the arm and can also swivel 360o for versatility. They are available in two sizes, 1,100mm and 1,500mm and are available with two diameters; 75mm and 100mm.

A Complete LEV System

Laboratory extraction arms should be utilised in conjunction with one of our centrifugal fans to vent the captured fumes either directly to the atmosphere or depending on the working process. The cleaned air can then be returned to the atmosphere via a high-velocity cowl, as per HSG258: Controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work: A Guide to Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV).
